SUBJECT: Pollution Control Unit (PCU) Protection
A Pollution Control Unit (PCU) is a secondary device used in the grease exhaust ductwork of a kitchen ventilation
system for grease filtration, air pollution control and/or odor control. PCUs have been in the market for many
years and their numbers appear to be growing. With this growth, the question of how PCUs should be protected
is becoming more frequent.
NFPA 96, Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations, 2014 Edition
(Section 9.3.3) states, "Any equipment, listed or otherwise, that provides secondary filtration or air pollution control
and that is installed in the path of travel of exhaust products shall be provided with an approved automatic fire -
extinguishing system, installed in accordance with the fire -extinguishing system manufacturer's instructions..."
"Approved" is defined in NFPA 96, Section 3.2.1 as "Acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction."
The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Standards Technical Panel for Extinguishing Systems (STP 300) circulated
a proposed standard revision to the ANSI/UL 300 standard from August 28, 2009 to September 28, 2009. The
proposal was related to the use of fire extinguishing systems with secondary filtration and air pollution control
units with a follow up Voting Ballot Proposal that did not pass. Because the protection of secondary filtration
and air pollution control units is addressed in NFPA 96, the proposal was not further pursued by the Standards
Technical Panel.
At this time, UL does not have a fire test protocol in the ANSI/UL 300 standard for PCUs.
Recognized standard test procedures for the protection of PCUs do not currently exist so PCU manufacturers
and fire system distributors have relied on fire suppression system manufacturers for guidance on the proper
protection which the local authorities have accepted in meeting the requirements of NFPA 96 as listed above.
PCUs vary considerably in size, capability, and filter media type. Due to these variables, as well as the lack
of performance -tested and listed guidelines, it becomes difficult to prescribe generic protection for all PCUs.
Consequently, when considering protection of a PCU intended for kitchen exhaust ventilation, contact Technical
Services for fire suppression system assistance and/or design/drawing service.
