Dear Mayor Avery and Council Members Blom, Brenner, Dixon, Duffield, Muldoon and O'Neill,
I support adoption of the revised G-1 Tree Policy designated as Item No. 4 on Tuesday's Consent Calendar. With the
changes previously directed by the Council at your January 12 meeting, the revised policy clarifies the protections for
our Landmark ('extra -special") Trees and incorporates some needed updates to the Policy.
I thank the Council, PB&R Commission and Staff for their attention to this important issue.

Dear Jeff Herdman,
I am writing to you today to encourage you NOT to approve the proposed amendments to the City's G-1 Tree Policy at
the next City Council Meeting on Tue, January 12, 2021. 1 have serious concerns with the proposed revisions to the
City's long-standing Tree Policy.
The proposed revisions are vague and confusing at best. If adopted, these revisions would only serve to weaken the
protections currently afforded to the City's "Special Trees" by establishing a completely new procedure by which a small
number of property owners in near proximity to a "Special Tree" can petition the City for removal of trees without good
cause and without requiring any proof of issue; utilizing evidence -based testing in the removal evaluation process. As
former Mayor Diane Dixon stated at a recent City Council meeting to consider the removal of Marine Ave Trees,
objective testing is critical and should be performed before making any determination to remove Special Trees on
Marine Ave. In addition, a petitioner seeking to remove a Special Tree should be required to pay for the actual cost of
testing in order to confirm that a Special Tree is in fact sick and/or dying. Removal of Special Trees simply because they
are not in favor at the moment should not be permitted under the City's G-1 Tree Policy.
It is imperative that the protections of Special Trees provided for in the G-1 Tree Policy be maintained and not watered
down through this amendment process. As a resident, taxpayer and voter I believe this is a matter of critical
importance. As you know, it is the strong view of the vast majority in our community that we do everything possible to
protect and preserve our City's Special Trees, especially those located along on Marine Ave.
