Dear Mr. Whites
1nolosed is a preliminary constmotion cost
eatteate for the improvement of 5th Avenue loetween Iris Avenue
and Lext."ur Avenue. The estimate is based on a tentative
vertical alignment which could change somewhat in finail design.
However, the estimated construction cost of $37,600 shot%ld be
sufficient for budget purposes.
Included in the estimate is an allowance of
$4500 for replacing the existing 12" and 10" cast iron water.
Uain with a new 12" A.C. line. Based on our tentative
p bfile, the existing main will have up to 17 feet ol.;cloyer.
This.depth would make it difficult to gain access for deeded
maintenanoel and, in the @vent of a failure, a large pe"ion
of the roadway embankment might be damaged.
When the final design has progressed further,
the question of the water main replacement can be reviewed
and a decision made.

CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH - PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
MEMO
TO: ASST. PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
FROM: PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
SUBJECT: FIFTH AVENUE
DATE FEB. 2 1966
COUNCILMAN PARSONS HAS REQUESTED THAT WE INVESTIGATE THE POSSIBILITY OF
PUTTING A TEMPORARY THROUGH ROAD ACROSS JASMINE GULLY. THIS WOULD HAVE THE ADVANTAGE
OF MAKING 5TH AVENUE CONTINUOUS AND ALSO CLASSIFYING IT AS A CONTINUOUS STREET IN
ADVANCE OF ANY FINAL FREEWAY DESIGNS BY THE STATE. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS PROJECT
INCLUDED IN NEXT YEARS CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM IF IT PROVES TO BE FEASIBLE. WE
SHOULD MAKE A SITE INSPECTION OF THIS AREA AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE DATE TO DETERMINE
WHAT THE IMPROVEMENT REQUIREMENTS WOULD BE.
