RECOMMENDATIONS:
DISCUSSION:
At 11:00 A. M. on September 10, 1981, the City Clerk opened
and read the following bids received for the Water Main Abandonment in
West Newport:

Matt J. Zaich, Jr., Glendale $32,760
Hane Construction Co., Long Beach $35,700
Tennyson Pipeline, Lynwood $35,700
R. E. Lenihan International, Inc., Huntington Beach $56,695
The low bid is 63.80% more than the $20,000 appropriation in
1981 -82 budget. The source of funds is the Water Fund.
The project consists of the abandonment of an old, unused red-
wood water main by pumping it full of a sand slurry. The sand slurry would
prevent any collapse of the main and stabilize the roadway surface above.
The project was initiated at the request of the Utilities Department.
The estimated date of completion is October 28, 1981 (if
awarded).
If the bids are rejected as recommended, portions of the
deteriorated water main will be removed or stabilized on an "as time permits"

SUBJECT: WATER MAIN ABANDONMENT IN WEST NEWPORT (C -2275)
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Approve the plans and specifications for the subject project.
2. Authorize the City Clerk to advertise for bids to be opened
at 11:00 A.M. on September 10, 1981.
DISCUSSION:
This project provides for the abandonment of two obsolete
redwood 24 -inch and 14- inch - diameter water mains. Sand slurry will be
injected into the pipes to prevent future settling of the roadway sur-
face. A sketch showing the location of the project is attached.
Funds totaling $20,000 have been provided under Project
Number 50- 9297 -150 for this work.
The plans and specifications were prepared by the Public Works
Department. The estimated date of completion is November 30, 1981.
