CASHIER RECEIPT NUMBER: - L^ �Dt�SS- 26 �—� Forms\modif 08/21/23 2) Request Seeking approval to utilize an alternate method of construction to those outlined in CBC 2022 for a private mausoleum structure constructed of solid granite slabs, dowelled together with stainless steel rods, and supported by a reinforced concrete foundation. We are presenting this structure to be designed under seismic classification as a monument structure with seismic R value equal to 2.0. As a Class U structure, the Mausoleum will be rarely occupied which correlates with our engineering judgement to use the seismic structure classification of a monument per ASCE 7-16 Section 15.4-2. While the structure does resemble a building, it functions more as a statue with storage. It is our professional opinion that it would be overly conservative to analyze the structure for a risk that it does not present. Utilizing a more conservative designation would also lead to excess anchorage which, in our judgement, presents more of a detriment to the structure's construction than it provides a benefit due to the additional drilling of the stone that would be required for additional anchorage. This system and design method using the Monument classification has been previously accepted for projects at this location. 3) Justification/Findings of Equivalency Structure works as a simple rigid diaphragm structure, with forces being transferred from roof to walls to foundation through the use of the steel dowels. Stress in granite members for both gravity and lateral loads are calculated with LRFD loading and justified with comparison to ASTM C-615, which sets minimum granite structural properties (see attached), and testing data for anchorage in granite (also attached). Anchor strengths are based upon physical testing for both shear and tension that has been performed for the various anchor sizes used in the design of this mausoleum (see testing agency accreditation information following). Ultimate shear forces and hold down forces are calculated and are compared to the testing data using LRFD loading with the applicable n factors applied. Combined forces are analyzed as similar to the method used to analyze combined forces in concrete per ACI 318 Chapter 17. Minor components not critical to the function of the main structure are connected with dowels, straps, and slot anchors (Type 31). These strengths of these anchors are also verified by material testing. Additionally, the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau California Code of Regulations Title 16. Division 23. sets forth the allowed use of granite structures for Mausoleum construction. Article 9. §2390 Construction (b) provides language on "...construction in which all bearing walls, beams, columns, floor slabs, and roof consists of marble or granite blocks, in solid form, pinned with non -corrosive structural metal pins...". This section of the CCR document is attached for your reference. Construction (a) Private mausoleums and columbariums shall be constructed as allowed in Section 9600.6 of the Health and Safety Code. (b) Solid type construction of private mausoleums and columbariums shall also comply with the methods and standards set forth in Part 5 of the Mausoleum and Columbarium Law, (commencing with Section 9501 of the Health and Safety Code), with the exception of Sections 9627, 9632, and 9646, and with the addition of the following construction methods: Solid type construction is construction in which all bearing walls, beams, columns, floor slabs, and roof consists of marble or granite blocks, in solid form, pinned with non- corrosive structural metal pins as hereinafter described. The foundations and footings shall be of poured -in -place reinforced concrete designed and constructed in conformity with the Uniform Building Code. All bearing walls, beams, columns, floor slabs, and roof shall be constructed in conformity with the requirements set forth in the Uniform Building Code, except as otherwise provided in this section. Structural members shall be not less than six inches (6") thick, if of granite construction, and eight inches (8") thick, if of marble construction. Each structural part shall be properly pinned and anchored to each other structural part. All vertical joints shall be pinned a maximum of thirty-six inches (36") on centers, with pins a maximum of eighteen inches (18") from a horizontal joint, or pinned with one pin per joint section, whichever spacing is smaller. All horizontal points shall be pinned a maximum of twenty-four inches (24") on centers, or in the case of wall slabs of width greater than twenty-four inches (24' ), each slab shall be pinned to roof and floor with at least two pins. No pins shall be closer than four inches (4") to the corner of a stone. Pins shall be bronze, stainless steel or other non -corrosive structural metal, at least three -fourths inch (3/4") in diameter and six inches (6") long. Pins shall be properly grouted in one (1 ") holes drilled to a minimum depth of three inches (3" ), January 2016 Page 27 except the foundations, where they shall be set in place when the concrete is poured. Each course shall be properly grouted solid. All joints services shall be properly roughened to give the binding surfaces a roughness necessary for proper binding. At all vertical joints there shall be proper cramps at each joint line of a similar non -corrosive variety. No course shall be less than eighteen inches (18") in height, and thirty-six (36") in length. The roof stone shall be pinned to the side walls. All joints shall be large enough to allow for expansion and contraction, and shall be raked at least one-half inch (1/2") deep, unless constructed of single slabs. Where granite or marble roof is constructed of more than one piece, and pitch is three inches (3") per twelve inches (12") or less, up -slope pieces must overlap down -slope pieces by a minimum of eight inches (8"). For pitches more than three inches (3") to six inches (6") per twelve inches (12"), this minimum overlap shall be four inches (4"). For a slope steeper than six inches (6"), this minimum overlap shall be one and one inches (1 1/2"). Where granite or marble roof stone is level or nearly level, and terminated in a vertical joint on one or more sides, this vertical joint shall be protected by a superimposed cap, along whose edge a drainage trough shall be cut in the roof stone of such size and slope as to prevent moisture from entering the bed joint between roof stone and cap. All interior and exterior fastenings for hangers, clips, doors, and other objects shall be of copper base alloy, aluminum, copper, or stainless steel of adequate gauges. All exterior metals used for doors, window frames, skylights, gutters, downspout, flashing, or in embellishment shall be of copper, copper -based alloy, aluminum, or stainless steel of gauges structurally determined. The new abrasive is currently more aggressive, resulting in lower abrasive hardness values (H.) than when the standard was initially established. As such, care should be taken when interpreting He values from tests using the new abrasive, particulary with regard to current ASTM stone standard specification requirements for abrasion resistance, which were developed when the original abrasive was still in use. Committee C18 is actively studying alternatives to address this issue. "Abrasion Resistance Test Method C1353 will eventually replace Test Method C241/C241M and it is not necessary to perform both tests. The specimens were nominally 12" x 12" x 6" in size, with a stainless steel pin adhered into a hole in the approximate center of one of the 6" x 12" faces. The adhesive used was reported by the client to be Simpson SET XP epoxy. The pins were of r/2", %" and 1" diameters with embedments of 3", 4", and 6" respectively. Varying lengths of pin were extending from the stone surface and all pins had threaded ends to allow capture with a hex nut. ASTM C1354, Standard Test Method for Strength of Individual Anchorages in Dimension Stone was followed. The stones were tested in an "as received" condition, and were neither oven dried nor saturated. Two mild steel restraint fixtures were built (Reference photos). One fixture was used to restrain the stone specimens for tensile loading; the other fixture was used to restrain the stone for shear loading. Both fixtures allowed capture of the stone specimen at one end, while the anchor pin was loaded in either tension or shear via a lever that provided a 2:1 leverage on the anchor. The tests were performed on an Applied Testing Systems Universal Testing Machine Model 910 with a maximum capacity of 10,000 lbs-force. Loads were measured with a 12,500 lb-F capacity Interface Model 1020AF-12.51K-B load cell, serial number 561415A, the most recent date of calibration for which is August, 2019. The leverage designed into the test fixtures allowed a 20,000 lbs-F load to be applied to the anchor without exceeding the 10,000 lbs-F capacity of the machine. Load was applied smoothly with a crosshead travel speed of :50.10 in/min, which due to the 2:1 leverage would limit the travel at anchor location to <_0.05 in/min. Load application continued until either failure of the stone, failure of the anchor, a 20% drop in load (triggering the automated 80% break detect), or the maximum machine capacity was reached. If maximum capacity of the machine was reached, the peak load was sustained for 60 seconds after which the load was relaxed. Natural Stone Institute Headquarters Office: 380 E. May 27, 2020) in support of structural calculations performed for the Pacific View Mausoleum in Corona del Mar, CA. At the time of said testing the NSI Test Laboratory was registered with the Army Corp of Engineers for stone properties stone properties testing and has since been evaluated by the IAS International Accreditation Service for compliance with ISO 17025 requirements for testing laboratories. As the current lab manager of the NSI test lab, I can attest that the test procedures employed in the refenced test report to evaluate embedded anchorage strength of the "Carnelian Granite" and "Sierra White Granite" materials are in keeping with the procedures that would be employed today on such a project. Additionally, that the test equipment referenced as having been employed (ATS UTM Model 910 [ICN: NSI00003] and 12,500 lb-F capacity Interface Model 1020AF-12.51K-B load cell [ICN: NSI00004]) were calibrated at the time of testing and that both items are equipment still in regular use at our test facility. SAMPLE DESCRIPTION: Prepared samples consisting of stone, epoxy and anchor were shipped to Stork Twin City Testing Corporation, and were received on August 31, 2010. The shipment consisted of 3 pallets; one pallet contained 5 specimens labeled as Job Number 08-8285 TP-1-1 through TP-1-5, one pallet of 10 specimens labeled as Job Number 08-8285 TP-2-1 through TP-2-5 and Job Number TP-3-1 through TP-3-5; and the third pallet contained 10 specimens labeled as Job Number 09-8352 TP1-1 through TP-1-5 and Job Number 09-8352 TP-2-1 through TP2-5. Stork TCT personnel did not prepare any of the stone epoxy grout anchors that were tested; Specimens were tested as submitted. TEST METHOD: Anchor testing began on September 8, 2010. The testing was conducted generally pursuant to sections of ASTM E 488-96 "Standard Test Methods for Strength of Anchors in Concrete and Masonry Elements"as restrained anchors. For Series 1 the tension testing was conducted using 1" x 12" stainless steel threaded rod elements that were installed by the client. The embedment was noted to be 6" and verified after testing. The anchors were identified as having been installed with "Masterflow, 648 CP Plus" epoxy grout into "Venetian Gold" stone. After the cure time, the anchors were pulled to failure. The tests were conducted using an electrically -powered hydraulic pump and hydraulic cylinder to apply the load to the anchor. Load and anchor displacement were measured using a force transducer and linear displacement transducer, both calibrated and NIST traceable.
