SUBJECT: CORONA DEL MAR BUS SHELTER— EXTRA WORK
RECOMMENDATION:
Authorize the Public Works Director to approve extra work in the amount of $6,028.16,
which provided for the assembly and installation of six bus shelters along Coast
Highway in Corona Del Mar.
DISCUSSION:
In November of 2002, Baxter - Griffin Company, Inc. was contracted to assemble and
install City- furnished bus shelters at six locations along Coast Highway in Corona Del Mar
for $28,200.
After the initial contract had been approved, the design team decided to modify the
anchor bolts at a cost of $956.65 for the contractor to furnish and install the 48 anchor
bolts.
During construction, the contractor encountered underground utilities, which led to the
relocation of planter irrigation pipe as well as street light conduit in several of the six
locations. Additionally, the existing location of another utility caused a redesign of the
reinforced concrete foundations at two of the installation locations. This work was
completed on a time and material basis and the cost amounted to $5,073.51 in extra
work reports. Due to the change in anchor bolts and the extra work, the project has
exceeded the $30,000 threshold and requires City Council approval.
Staff requests approval of the extra work. Additional funds are available in the
unappropriated balance of the Coast Highway Channelization Project, Account No. 7261-
05100698.

Environmental Review:
The project was determined to be exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act
(CEQA) pursuant to Section 15061(b)(3) of the CEQA Implementing Guidelines at the
time the project was authorized, because it could be seen with certainty that there was
no possibility that the project would have a significant effect on the environment. The
justification is the six bus shelters are contained within the existing developed right -of-
way of Coast Highway.
