A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH IN SUPPORT OF EXPANSION.OF
SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT (SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY)
0 WHEREAS, in order to provide an adequate supply of
electrical energy to its consumers, the Edison Company since
1970 has sought approval to expand the San Onofre Nuclear
Generating Plant, and has received permits from local, state
and federal agencies, including the Atomic Energy Commission,
but permission to expand has been denied by the State Coastal
Zone Conservation Commission; and
WHEREAS, expansion of the San Onofre Nuclear
Generating Plant would involve only approximately one -half mile
of coastline, but responds to the urgent demand for increased
electrical power, and at the same time conserves millions of
barrels of oil per year and millions of cubic feet of natural
gas; and
WHEREAS, the adverse environmental impact of the San
Onofre expansion project would be minimal, while a shortage of
electrical energy would have a very serious effect on the public
health, safety and welfare; and
WHEREAS, the current power shortage is likely to
become more acute within the next few months, and even more
critical in the future;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach hereby commends the California
Coastal Zone Conservation Commission for reconsidering the
application to expand, and urgently requests that it rescind
its previous decision and grant immediate approval for the
further development of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating
• Station.
