HomeMy WebLinkAbout8331 - Pacific Coast Highway Bay BridgeRESOLUTION NO. 8331 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH REQUESTING THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO ADOPT A JOINT RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION TO EXPEDITE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROPOSED NEW PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY BAY BRIDGE WHEREAS, the California Department of Transportation has scheduled a project to replace the existing 4 -lane bridge on Pacific Coast Highway over Newport Bay, between Bayside Drive and Dover Drive - Bayshore Drive; and WHEREAS, the purpose of the project is to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce the serious accident rate because of the existing narrow bridge, as well as to avoid the necessity of closing the bridge for extensive repairs because of its present deteriorated condition; and WHEREAS, the closing of the bridge for extensive repairs is considered unacceptable by the Department of Trans- portation since it would require Pacific Coast Highway through traffic to travel a minimum additional distance of six miles, over roads incapable of carrying such traffic volumes; and WHEREAS, the project is presently scheduled for construction in the 1976 -77 fiscal year; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach that the State Legislature is hereby requested to adopt a joint resolution urging the State Highway Commission to expedite the construction of the new Pacific Coast Highway Bay Bridge, in order to alleviate traffic congestion, re- duce the accident rate, and provide a safe and efficient alternate to the existing bridge as soon as possible.
