A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF N*WPORT BEACH URGING THE CITIES OF ORANGE
COUN Y AND THE COUNTY OF ORANGE TO ADOPT A
PROH BITION ON THE SALE AND DISPLAY OF
it FIRE ORKS, URGING THE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA
CITI S, ORANGE COUNTY DIVISION TO ADOPT A
RESOLUTION URGING THE SAME AND URGING THE
LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES TO PROMOTE
LEGISLATION TO PROHIBIT THE SALE AND DISPLAY
OF FIREWORKS BUT TO PERMIT DISPLAYS BY
LICENSED PYROTECHNICIANS
, the City of Newport Beach currently prohibits
the sale and display of fireworks, including safe and sane
fireworks;
, many cities within Orange County and the
County itself in unincorporated areas permit the sale and display
of fireworks including safe and sane fireworks; and
REAS, a significant number of fireworks sold within
the County are used and displayed within the City of Newport
Beach, where such activity is prohibited; and
, the use, display and discharge of safe and
sane fireworks together with other fireworks constitutes a fire
hazard and Heal and present danger: of other forms of property
damage and �odily injury to users and non -users alike; and
W�EREAS, if there were a uniform prohibition of the
sale and display of fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks,
within all (cities of the County of Orange and the unincorporated
areas of the County, the opportunity to acquire said fireworks
would be seV!erly diminished and displays and discharge of

fireworks thereby diminshed or reduced; and
WIEREAS, if the sale and display of fireworks were
prohibited State -wide, the problem should be reduced to a minimum
or elimina ed all together; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that there be public and
semi - public displays of fireworks, discharged by licensed
pyrotechnicials to substitute for the private display of
fireworks, inlilulding safe and sane fireworks, to the benefit of
the public generally,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach as follows:
1. The City urges that all cities within the County of
Orange prohibit the sale and display of fireworks, including safe
and sane fireworks.
2. That the League of California Cities, Orange County
division, adopt a similar resolution urging all member cities and
the County of Orange to adopt ordinances prohibiting the sale and
display of fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks.
3. The City urges the League of California Cities to
support legislation before the State Legislature to prohibit the
sale and display of fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks
on a State -wide basis.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of NlLwport Beach that the City Clerk is hereby
authorized ands directed to send copies of this Resolution to each
City within the County of Orange, the League of California
Cities, OrangL County Division and to the Orange County Board of
Supervisors.
