HomeMy WebLinkAbout88-117 - UCI Express Student SystemRESOLUTION NO. 138 -117 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH COMMENDING THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT IRVINE (UCI) FOR THEIR CREATIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN EXPRESS STUDENT SYSTEM FROM THE CITY TO THE CAMPUS. • WHEREAS, the traffic congestion in Orange County is a major problem for residents and businesses in Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the students at the University of California, Irvine, over 800 of whom live in the City of Newport Beach and commute to the campus daily, recognized their civic duty to creatively work on a way to diminish this problem; and WHEREAS, the students of UCI realized at the same time that they had an increasing problem with inadequate parking on their campus; and WHEREAS, the Associated Students of UCI then, of their own initiative, created and implemented a successful and expanding Express Shuttle system, which transports an average 110 students per day from the Balboa Island area to the campus. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach gives this endorsement of support to the Associated Students of UCI in recognition of the superlative achievements they have made with this innovative program servicing a joint University and community need, and commends these efforts. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages the Associated Students of UCI to continue to seek new solutions to problems in the spirit of civic responsibility. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Associated Students at UCI, along with the gratitude of the citizens of Newport Beach.
