Y,777 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA, PERTAINING TO THE POSITION OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH WITH RESPECT TO DOCKET NO. 7984 ET AL., SOUTHERN TRANSCONTINENTAL SERVICE CASE, BEFORE THE CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach is a municipal corporation situated in Orange County, California; and WHEREAS, the population of Newport Beach has approxi- mately doubled in the last ten years from 12,120 in 1950 to an estimated 24,000 persons in 1959; and WHEREAS, Newport Beach is one of the yachting and recreational boating centers of the Pacific Coast, with an estimated 5000 boats home based in the Newport Harbor area, together with facilities for the construction, repair and maintenance of said boats; and WHEREAS, the Newport Harbor area is the location of two of the major yacht clubs in the United Sta Newport Harbor Yacht Club and the Balboa Yacht WHEREAS, the boating activity in the is substantial as indicated by a traffic count August, 1958 of a total of 52,000 boats in and harbor; and ces, namely, the Club; and Newport Harbor for the month of out of the WHEREAS, the industrial and business outlook for the Newport Beach area is most optimistic, with a division of Hughes Aircraft employing 1500 persons and a plant of Aeronutronic Systems Inc., a Ford Motor Company subsidiary, employing 900 persons presently located in the Newport Beach area, and with 2000 acres of industrial land available for development; and WHEREAS, the Long Beach Municipal Airport, located approximately 18 miles from Newport Beach, with an estimated driving time of 30 to 40 minutes, is the most convenient major airport for the use of the residents, businessmen and yachting 1 a • • r 1 2 3 4 S 0 7' 7 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 enthusiasts of the Newport Beach area; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Newport Beach resolves as follows: Section 1. That by reason of the rapid growth in population, business and industry in the City of Newport Beach and surrounding areas in Orange County, California, and by reason of the prominence of Newport Beach as a yachting and recreational boating center of the Pacific Coast, that the needs and convenience of the traveling public require that this area be provided with new and improved scheduled airline service at the Long Beach Municipal Airport. That the Long Beach Municipal Airport, as the closest and most convenient major airport to the residents and businessmen of the City of Newport Beach, should be designated as a terminal or inter- mediate point on all domestic trunkline routes presently certificated or which may be certificated to serve Southern California as a result of the decision in the Southern Trans- continental Service Case, Docket No. 7984 et al., to the extent the same may be legally possible within the scope of the proceeding. Section 2. The adoption by the City Council of this resolution is not to be construed as favoring or endorsing the application of any specific airline in this proceeding. The interest of the City of Newport Beach is to assist the Civil Aeronautics Board in its determination of the need for new and improved scheduled airline service between the Long Beach Municipal Airport and the cities within the scope of this proceeding.
