HomeMy WebLinkAbout6666 - Surplus Sand to Replenish BeachesTHSamec x.1/9/67 RESOLUTION NO. 6666 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CORPS OF ENGINEERS, THE COUNTY OF ORANGE AND THE ORANGE COUNTY HARBOR DISTRICT TO MAKE AVAILABLE SURPLUS SAND RESULTING FROM THE DREDGING OF THE NEWPORT BAY FOR USE IN REPLENISHING PUBLIC BEACHES IN THE CITY WHEREAS, there is a Federally authorized project for additional dredging in lower Newport Bay; and WHEREAS, it is desirable to complete this dredging project in the interest of navigation, and WHEREAS, there is also a Federally authorized coop- erative project for beach stabilization of the Newport ocean beaches; and WHEREAS, the United States Corps of Engineers, the County of Orange and the Orange County Harbor District are jointly participating in both the navigation project and the beach stabilization project, and WHEREAS, it appears desirable to coordinate these two projects; and WHEREAS, there are additional dredging projects that are contemplated for the upper Newport Bay area; and WHEREAS, the beaches in Newport Beach have tradition- ally received high recreational beach use by the people of the City, County, and State; and WHEREAS, it would be in the public's interest to retain this resource by depositing thereon high quality material derived from said dredging; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby requests the United States Corps of Engineers, the County of Orange and the Orange County Harbor District to take into con- sideration the needs of the public beaches within the City in their planning for the dredging of the Newport Bay and for the periodic sand replenishment proposed in the beach stabilization program.
